This is the follow-up to the 2017 online game Hitman 2, the eighth major installment of the Hitman series, and the third and final installment in the World of Assassination trilogy. Concluding the plot arc started in Hitman; the single-player storyline follows genetically-engineered assassin Agent 47 and his allies as they hunt down the leaders of the secretive organization Providence, which controls the world's affairs and was partially responsible for 47's creation and upbringing.The game is played from a third-person viewpoint focusing on interactive elements within 47's world. As with previous entries in the series, this game has six levels, which include five huge open-ended sandboxes. Agent 47 can roam every map without restriction to find possibilities for assassination. Agent 47 can complete tasks within each mission to gain access to new items.

The base game has seven new locales: Dubai, Dartmoor, Berlin, Chongqing, and Mendoza, along with the Carpathian Mountains, Romania. Players of Hitman, as well as Hitman 2, can transfer maps, levels, and progress in Hitman 3.Locations in Hitman 3 include persistent shortcuts, which is a brand-new gameplay element added to the Hitman series. Hitman 3 features Contracts Mode that lets players choose up to five targets on every map in the series, add rules and challenges such as specific kill strategies and even share contract details with players. "Featured Contracts" are often added and could include a variety of community-based contracts that cover the theme of a specific time (such as during The Seasons of Sin or arrangements created by certain gaming magazines or YouTube channels) such as Kinda Funny as well as Eurogamer. It also includes extra missions developed by the creators known in the game as "Escalations," which are multi-stage contracts that are harder as the player finishes each stage.
Hitman 3 also features 'Elusive Targets, These are time-bound missions which can only be completed one time. On January 20, 2022 IO Interactive added a new game mode dubbed 'Elusive Target Arcade.
